Overview
321H stainless steel is a titanium stabilized austenitic stainless steel with a carbon content of 0.04% ~ 0.10% to differ from that of 321 (C ≤ 0.08%). From the limit of carbon content comes the resulted difference on titanium content, with 321H at 4×(C+N) ~ 0.70% and 321 at 5×(C+N) ~ 0.70%. Their mechanical properties, whether in terms of plate form (ASTM A240) or pipe form (ASTM A312) remain the same. Hence it is not hard to discern 1) 321H is regarded as a higher carbon version of 321. 2) 321H is always introduced with 321 hand in hand. However in China, 321H and 321 seldom appear as dual certification. The reason is that 321H always has requirement on grain size. As a matter of fact, 321H stainless steel is initially designed to enhance creep resistance and high temperance strength above 537°C. If you buy from China stainless steel 321H, don’t take it granted that they are the same, but indicate your specific grade. Features of Stainless Steel 321H
Stainless steel 321H features good general corrosion resistance, similar to that of 304/304L. As 304/304L stainless steel is more readily available for most product forms at lower cost, they are more preferred to 312H. If customers simply look for intergranular corrosion resistance post welding, 304L comes into thought before 321H. However, 321H stands out for use in the chromium carbide precipitation range of 427°C ~ 816°C where 304 will be assailed by intergranular attack. Plus, 321H also has good fatigue resistance, resistance to scaling, and phase stability. Above all, 321H features excellent creep strength and creep rupture strength. Hence, 321H is quite often seen used for high temperature services.
