Overview

304H stainless steel can be regarded as a higher carbon version of 304 widely used for high-temperature services, if 304L is seen as the lower carbon version of 304. Specifically, the carbon content of type 304H is controlled at 0.04%~0.10% for increased strength at temperatures between 427°C and up to 800°C. However, 304H stainless steel will become sensitized under temperatures of 425-860°C. This can weaken its aqueous corrosion resistance though not an issue for high temperature applications. Hence, it is not suggested to use 304H under such applications where subsequent aqueous corrosion resistance is required for a work temperature of 425-860°C. Type 304H is superior to 304L in long-term and short term creep strength at temperatures above 500°C. It also exhibits better sensitization resistance than 304L. Due to its good heat resistance, type 304H is commonly used in ASME pressure vessels under operation temperatures above 525°C.

Features of Stainless Steel 304H

Stainless steel 304H features similar corrosion resistance to that of 304/304L, though 304L may have the slowest corrosion rate among the three. In most cases, their resistance to corrosion in oxidizing environments, reducing environments and aggressive organic acids such as acetic are uniformly good when the concentration is low to moderate. However, due to high carbon content, 304H stainless steel is apt to get sensitized and incur intergranular corrosion at welds and heat affected zones. In such cases, post-annealing can be applied to restore its corrosion resistance.

Type 304H is quite ductile, readily welded and easily formed. Due to its higher strength at elevated temperatures, 304H stainless steel is widely used for structural and pressure containing applications in the temperature range of 500-800°C.
